Just finished reading The Theatre and Its Double by Artaud and I have to say that I am more than mildly intrigued and more than ever confused. I do think that this will merit a second and probably third reading to fully grasp his concepts. His manifesto on the Theatre of Cruelty raises some interesting ideas on involving the audience in the theatrical process. Some of his notions of sound, aesthetic, and theatricality remind me of the wave of immersive theatre that has become widely popular with the success of Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More. I will not give you my full analysis yet as I want to reread it once or twice to see if I can grasp a little more understanding. However, I am using some of his philosophy for a new and exciting project that I will be sure to update you on as soon as it hits. Just wanted to pass the word on what I’m looking at just in case you were in need of a new book to pick up. If you read it; let me know what you think!
